Our hearts are filled with sadness today because we have lost Rose Mary Burgess-Lockett of Ponca City. She passed from this world on January 29, 2019 in Oklahoma City. She was only 63 years old. Funeral services, under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel, will be held at The Carolyn Renfro Center 455 Fairview Ponca City, OK beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2019. The ministers Lorenzo Lockett and Tim Johnson will officiate the service. Casket bearers will include Victor Miller, Thomas Charles, Bruce Loud, Donald Miller, Arthur Miller, and Jimi Miller. Honorary bearers are Carlton Clardy and Timothy Harris. Burial will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Ponca City.
Rose was born on July 11, 1955 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Arthur Joe and Lula Mae (Parker) Miller. The couple were blessed with a large family and the house was always filled with laughter. She was born and raised in Ponca City and graduated from Ponca City High School in the early 1970’s. She then attended college at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa.
Rose began her working career as a teacher’s aide and ended her career as a child nutritionist in the public schools. She worked at Ponca City Schools until her death. All of the staff at the schools will miss her and are sad to see her go. She worked very hard for everything she had. She was proud of all that she had accomplished, deservedly so.
Rose was a member of the Life Church in Ponca City as well as St. John Baptist. She enjoyed attending church with family and friends. She loved to dance and read scary books. She was a brilliant cook. Her children remember three recipes as being the “Best in the World”, her lasagna, her chicken and rice and her ice box pies. Rose loved to watch scary movies.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, former husband Carlos Burgess, siblings Anthony Miller, Anette Miller, Diana Jefferson and Lasha Miller, and one niece Dortheia Pugh.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband George Lockett of the home, son Carlos Miller, son Brian Miller and wife Stacey Miller, daughter Rashawna DeRogers and her husband Malcom, daughter Mirakle Burgess, and son Omar Burgess, grandchildren: Carlos Miller, Jr., Kamari Miller, Troy Carson, Tashanti Carson, Christyana DeRogers, Shica Willis, Takyah Carson, and Inell DeRogers. Sisters: Wanda Brown and her husband Darrell, Virginia Coburn, Dorothy McDonald and her husband Robert and Pamela Miller. Brothers: Joe Miller and his wife Sheila, Thomas miller and his wife Kellie, David Miller and his wife Sherry, Arthur Miller and his wife Keren, and Donald Miller. Former husband Steve Hodge, a host of nieces and nephews and a large extended family.
A Silent Tear
Just close your eyes and you will see all the memories that you have of me. Just sit and relax and you will find, I’m still there inside your mind. Don’t cry for me now I’m gone, for I’m in the land of song. There is no pain, there is no fear, so dry away that silent tear. Don’t think of me in the dark and cold for here, I’m no longer old. I’m in that place that’s filled with love known to you all as “up above”.
