d. June 18, 2008

Berta E. Goad Berta E. Goad, resident of Ralston, Oklahoma passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Fairfax Manor Nursing Home in Fairfax, Oklahoma. She was 86. Berta was born the daughter of John Emerson Plummer and Lucille Artishma Bennett Plummer on August 4, 1921 in a small house in Osage County about three miles north of Blackburn, Oklahoma. Berta had many happy memories of growing up on the farm. Berta attended Blackburn high school, a four room building with nine students in her class. While in school, she played basketball, made good grades and had a lot of friends. Berta first saw Bernard Goad at the age of 13. He was on a hay wagon and whistled at her and wanted to know her name, and from that day on, they were friends. Bernard and Berta were united in marriage on May 25, 1942 in Ponca City, Oklahoma, and during their 66 year marriage, they had two children, Sue Dixie. Berta was always busy. She taught home economics at Ralston High School and was a basketball coach there as well. She quit teaching when she had her first child, and devoted her time to being a fulltime wife and mother. Being a farmers wife consisted of caring for cattle, hogs, chickens and milk cows. She canned tomatoes, corn, green beans and pickles that they picked from their large garden. Berta also made jelly from wild berries and plums. She loved to sew, and in fact made all the clothing her family wore. She attended the Federated Church in Ralston, Oklahoma, and later the First Osage Baptist Church in Fairfax where she was the church clerk for 18 years. She taught Sunday school for 50 years. Berta was very active with the school and community. She attended PTA, coached the 4-H Club, worked on the election board, belonged to the Book Mobile Board in Pawhuska and had many get-togethers with the neighbors. She also belonged to a home demonstration Club and was a founding member of the Fun Club that she started in 1948 and remained an active member for 60 years. She also played cards with the Ralston Co-op Group. She loved reading and playing Yhatzee. During her later years, she enjoyed caring for her granddaughter, Jill. Berta was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her loving husband, Bernard Goad of Ralston, Oklahoma; daughter, Sue Scott and her husband, John of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 2 brothers, Ted Plummer and his wife, Oleta of Fairfax, Oklahoma and John Plummer of Blackburn, Oklahoma; 1 sister, Helen Scott of Wichita, Kansas; grandchildren, Jill Watson and husband, Ray of Dallas, Texas, Carmen Kraft and husband, Jeff of Bixby, Oklahoma, Mark Brown and wife, Heather of Fairfax, Oklahoma; great grandchildren, Jordan Watson, Jake Watson, Alex Kraft, Lauren Kraft, Heather Brown, Haylee Brown, Paige Brown, Rilee Brown, Shelby Botts, Tanner Botts, Ashley Tefertiller; great great grandson, Titan Nolan Pickering; numerous nieces and nephews; and special family friends Audrey and Richard Oder of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
