Freddie Aaron Others Sr., also known as “Big Dog”, 73, passed away in Ponca City at home surrounded by family on July 2, 2023.
Freddie was born on July 6, 1949 in Pawnee, Oklahoma to the late Marvin and Christine Blueback Raise the Other. He was a member of the Ponca Tribe and his Ponca Indian Name was Nizhapawah and his Ponca Clan was Wohzhazhe. He attended school at McKinley Elementary, then Ponca City West Jr. High and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1967.
Freddie then listed in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era in February of 1968 and was stationed at the Naval Base in Long Beach, California then transferred to San Diego. He served two more years in the Navy Reserve and was on the USS Leader Ship.
He was raised in Bodock which was his ranch home. He worked for many surrounding tribes, Ponca Tribal Housing, Kaw Nation, and Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma and then moved on to work for Williams Pipeline and was a keen mechanic. If someone had a problem with their vehicle he would take care of them and later passed it down to his two sons. Big Dog enjoyed working on cars, listening to Linda Rohnstadt, Al Green, Roy Orbison, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and going to the casino. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing Shinny with his nephews and grandsons. You could always catch him in style in his bandanna and sunglasses and saying “Like a Big Dog”, “All Night Long”, “Everything will be copacetic”, “Life Goes On” and would always ask his grandkids if they wanted to be a Jelly Bean or a Rubberband Man. He also had a love for eagles and red birds, and loved rubies which was his birth stone.
Those left behind to cherish Freddie’s memory are: his big sister Mona and husband Darryl Reed, his children Michelle “Baby Girl” Others, Freddie “Little Dog” Others, and Lonnie Aaron R.T. Others, Christy Sue Others, Nelly “Little One” Zotigh, Jennifer (Granddaughter) Joyce, who he raised as his own. Grandchildren: Victor, Adam, and Summer, Aaron and Leticia, Christine, Larena, Rose, Angelina and Trey, Freddie III, Lavell, Elliott, LonnieAnn, Hethuska, Anthony (#9), Makaylee, Marissa, William (Wild Bill), Tanner, Kazley, Latisha, Albert, Eric, Olene, Lavera, and Gray. As well as 23 great-grandchildren and one great-grandpuppy Abel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 siblings, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 6th, 2023, 2 pm, at the Ponca Indian United Methodist Church in White Eagle with Pastor Jim White officiating. Burial will follow at the Ponca Tribal Cemetery.
