Bernice Wrolstad

April 3, 1930 — September 21, 2019

Bernice Phyllis (Cries for Ribs) Wrolstad passed away September 21, 2019 in Ponca City, Oklahoma at the age of 89.  Bernice was born to Solon and Lucy (Blueback) Cries for Ribs on April 30, 1930 at the family home in White Eagle.  She completed the family as the baby of 12 children. Bernice is a member of Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, she is of the Rain Clan.

Bernice grew up in the White Eagle and Ponca City area until she went to Muskogee to attend the School for the Blind. Here she learned to play the piano by ear and became very proficient in reading braille.  Bernice met and married her soulmate, Laverne O Wrolstad.  Together they raised their family of eight children.  They were able to enjoy forty years together as husband and wife before Laverne passed away.

Bernice was a wonderful mother, passing down her knowledge to her children, teaching them to cook and reading to them at night. She enjoyed sewing and made many clothes for the children through the years.  She will be remembered fondly for her crocheting skills and how fast she was able to crotchet.  She was known for helping to make the Memorial Day flowers using; crepe paper, wire and wax. Bernice was highly respected and loved by all the tribal members.  She was a marvelous mentor, a true lady that lead by example.  She was what a Native woman should be.  She was always laughing and enjoying life. Bernice was a member of the Bible Methodist Church.  She loved God and shared her joy with many.

Bernice is survived by her children; Laura Primeaux, Kelly Anquoe, Julie Cesenas, and Cleveland Primeaux; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Her nieces Eraina and Kitty had a special place in her heart due to them always being there to lend her a helping hand and taking care of her.

She is preceded in death by her husband; Laverne, children; Linda, Ronnie, Terry and Ross as well as her siblings.

Bernice will be missed greatly by all who knew her. One condolence the family takes with them is that now Bernice and Laverne will be together forever.

Traditional Ponca Tribal services will be held for Bernice at the Ponca Tribal Cultural Center.  Services will conclude Tuesday with the Noon Feast, followed by the funeral service and conclude at the Ponca Indian Cemetery in White Eagle, Oklahoma. Casket bearers will be; Joel Si McBlair, Jubile McBlair, Ezrah Tah-Delodge, Munchuska “MJ” Primeaux, Craig Primeaux, Trey Howe, Justin Thompson and Aaron “Bubb” LeClair
