Hazel Headman

May 25, 1937 — January 14, 2021

Hazel Diane Headman

Hazel Diane Headman joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at the age of 83 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.  Her life on earth began in Pawnee, Oklahoma on May 25, 1937 when she joined her parents, Beatrice (Pappan) and Albert Makescry, Sr.

Hazel grew up in the Ponca City area and attended Ponca Public Schools.  She received her High School Diploma from PoHi in 1956.  After graduation she furthered her education by attending first Northern Oklahoma College followed by Oklahoma State University, earning her Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Elementary Education.  She was very proud of her schooling and the education she acquired through all her hard work and studying.  Hazel taught for several years at various schools in the Ponca City School District.  She had the honor of being the first teacher with the Head Start program when it began at the Old Lincoln School. After her years of teaching young minds, Hazel worked as an alcohol and drug abuse counselor for eighteen years helping many women through very difficult times.

Hazel raised five children in her loving home, Christiana, Brian, Linda, Rachel, and Muriel.  She was a strong Christian woman of faith who leaned on God’s care and comfort to see her and her family through all times.  In 1976 she joined her family with Louis Headman’s family to make a loving home.  Together, Hazel and Louis have enjoyed forty-five years as husband and wife.

Hazel will be fondly remembered by those who knew her.  She was a well-known church woman on the Ponca Nation Reservation.  Hazel always greeted everyone with a smile and made sure that they all knew they were important to her.  She had a genuine loving, caring, kindhearted, and forgiving nature.  She was helpful beyond measure for anyone she could offer a helping hand to. Hazel was a lifelong member of the Ponca Indian Nazarene Church, acting as the state representative for the church district for a number of years.  Her passing will leave a huge void for everyone in the area.

Left to mourn her passing is her husband, Louis Headman, children, Christiana Simpson and her companion Steve Bear, Brian Kemble, Linda Caballero, and Rachel Kemble, nine grandchildren, forty great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her baby girl, Muriel Beatrice Kemble, parents, Albert and Beatrice Makescry, and her siblings, Suzanne White Eagle, Rachel Primeaux, and Albert Makescry, Jr.

Traditional Tribal services will be held in Hazel’s honor.  Family and friends may pay their respects at the Ponca Indian Nazarene Church starting Saturday, January 16, 2021, evening.  The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm Monday, January 18, 2021, at the Ponca Indian Nazerene Church with Pastor Josie Busby presiding.  She will be laid to rest in the Ponca Tribal Cemetery following the service.  Pallbearers will be Bruce Johnson, Wesley Bear, Johnny Kemble, Dallas Kemble, Buddy Simpson, and Dustin Simpson.  Honorary Bearers are, Steven Simpson, Jonathan Simpson, Cory Simpson, Daryl Scott, Michael Johnson, Stacy Favell, Charlie Steeprock, Vincent Headman, Ty Headman, Tim Primeaux, Albert Primeaux and Gabriel Primeaux.
