Despite only having a 5th grade education, he went on to build and manage his own business, Payne Tire and Salvage. His endeavor was extremely successful. He loved his work and continued more than 15 years until a massive stroke pushed him into early retirement.

Some of Jim’s favorites included hunting and fishing, old cars and watching westerns on TV. He was especially fond of ones starring Clint Eastwood. If you went to visit him, you could be sure a western was playing. He also enjoyed many weekend trips to Tulsa with Marilyn to go to flea markets and Red Lobster.
